Signs and Symptoms of Dyslexia

  • Reads slowly and painfully
  • Experiences decoding errors, especially with the order of letters
  • Shows wide disparity between listening comprehension and reading comprehension of some text
  • Has trouble with spelling
  • May have difficulty with handwriting
  • Exhibits difficulty recalling known words
  • Has difficulty with written language
  • May experience difficulty with math computations
  • Decoding real words is better than nonsense words
  • Substitutes one small sight word for another: a, I, he, the, there, was

Strategies To Help Dyslexic Students

  • Allow extra time on tests and assignments
  • Do not ask them to read aloud
  • Simplify and repeat directions
  • Do not label them as lazy, they have difficulty staying focused when reading and writing
  • Find something to praise the student for in all the work they do
  • Allow the student to dictate notes and responses to problems rather than write them
  • Provide a quiet area for activities like reading, answering comprehension questions
  • Use books on tape
  • Use books with large print and big spaces between lines
  • Provide a copy of class notes
  • Don’t count spelling on tests other than spelling tests
  • Allow alternative forms for book reports
  • Allow the use of a laptop or other computer for in-class essays
  • Use multi-sensory teaching methods
  • Teach students to use logic rather than rote memory
  • Present material in small units
  • Allow students to use text to speech and speech to text software
  • When asking a question give students time to answer or come back to them later
  • Allow a shorter written answer to questions
  • Provide a model essay as a template
  • For mathematics, allow the student to do the problems in their head instead of always showing their work
  • Typing is easier than handwriting
