The lack confidence and questioning one’s capabilities at work, especially in front of clients, co-workers and managers add to a dyslexic’s challenges in the workplace.
Technology can help dyslexics overcome the challenges in the workplace. Built-in spell check software can go a long way to correcting spelling errors. Smart phones and tablets commonly include text-to-speech and auto-complete functions to assist in writing.
Audio and visual content can make a big difference for dyslexics by providing information in a more dyslexia-friendly format including visual media, podcasts

Suggested strategies to help dyslexics build confidence include:
- Studying new vocabulary that might be important in a specific industry
- Repeatedly drilling information helps a dyslexic adult feel more confident
- Dyslexic individuals will also benefit from knowing how they process information best and letting co-workers and superiors know.
Tips for dyslexia at work
1. Let co-workers and superiors know.
2. Be upfront and honest about your dyslexia as it is nothing to be ashamed of.
3. Adjust your computer settings. Certain fonts can actually make it easier for dyslexic people to read text on a computer screen.
4. Adjusting the background color of a screen can also reduce distractions and make it faster to navigate a desktop.
5. Enroll in a literacy course created to help dyslexics. .
6. Practice your work related vocabulary. Make a list of words and phrases important to your job and find a program or an app to help you reinforce these words.
7. Allocate additional time. Time is a major factor at work and knowing how to allocate extra hours for tasks that may take you as a dyslexic longer to complete.
8. Use more charts and diagrams. You may find that it’s easier to process information if you turn tables into charts and diagrams.
9. Ask about presenting reports via video or audio summary.
10. Stay organized. Stress affects everyone in the workplace, particularly those struggling with a learning difficulty. To avoid feeling overwhelmed, stay organized and manage your tasks wisely.
11. Use headphones to drown out background noise
12. Chose a simple font that works for you such as: Open Dyslexic Verdana or Arial
13. Use a larger size font
14. Use text-to-speech and speech-to-text software to write emails and have them read back to you
