About Reading Fluency

Reading fluency is the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. It is a critical component of reading proficiency and is closely linked to reading comprehension.

Key Metrics

  • Words Correctly Read Per Minute (WCPM): The number of words read correctly in one minute. This is the primary measure of reading fluency.
  • Accuracy Percentage: The percentage of words read correctly out of the total words attempted.
  • Reading Rate: The total number of words attempted per minute, regardless of accuracy.
  • Fluency Score: A combined score that takes into account both speed and accuracy.

  1. Enter the book or passage title and select the child's grade level.
  2. Choose a passage text source:
    • Enter the passage text manually
    • Use speech-to-text to transcribe during reading
    • Select a pre-loaded passage appropriate for the grade level
  3. Choose an error detection method:
    • Automatic detection (experimental)

Tips for Accurate Assessment

  • Choose reading material at an appropriate level - not too easy or too difficult.
  • Ensure a quiet environment for clear audio recording.
  • For manual error counting, count substitutions, mispronunciations, omissions, and words that needed to be provided after 3 seconds.
  • Do not count self-corrections as errors.
  • Track progress over time to see improvement.
