How We’re Answering The Challenge

The Mayor’s Challenge

“Simple, powerful and unsolicited acts of kindness can make a difference in the lives of our neighbors and in the lives of the next generation. I challenge everyone to perform random acts of kindness daily!” said Mayor Muoio.

We’re answering the challenge

We discovered there are a lot of kids in West Palm Beach that struggle with reading. That’s not surprising since nearly 20% of the population is dsylexic.

Dyslexia is a learning disability that has no cure. The disability makes reading difficult. The problem often surfaces during the first few years of school.

Most parents and teachers don’t know the signs of this learning disability, so families tend to be lost when their kids first start to struggle in school.

When kids struggle with reading, the last thing they want to do is read in front of other kids in class. I know, I used to pray there would be a fire drill every time I was called on to read.

Practicing is important, but not the way most parents and teachers would think.

They key to reading practice, is that the kid practices:

  • Reading out loud
  • Reading in a non-judgmental situation (that’s why reading to dogs is great…more about that a bit later)
  • Reading in a stress-free environment
  • And receives recognition just for practicing
  • And receives rewards and prizes as incentives

City Of Kindness WPB At Big Dog Ranch Rescue

We’re kicking off our first of many planned, monthly, reading to dog events at Big Dog Ranch Rescue on Okeechobee Blvd on Sunday, October 14 from 1-2pm. Spots are limited, so be sure to sign up now, here’s the link: REGISTER NOW

This collaboration will help introduce great kids to great dogs and hopefully result in a few adoptions, while providing the perfect setting for kids who struggle with reading to read to a dog, one-on-one.

Dogs can’t judge you when you make mistakes and that plays such an important role in the process of improving and ultimately building your confidence.

Dyslexics Have Low Self-Esteem

As a dyslexic, I always felt stupid compared with other kids who read better than me. Other kids didn’t seem to struggle putting words together the way I did (still do actually).

The result of feeling this way really takes away all your confidence.

I formed Let’s Get Booking to help kids overcome their challenges and build their confidence.

And we’re only getting started. . .

Coming Soon . . .Community Reading Scheduling Software

We’re developing a software application that connects kids with locations throughout West Palm Beach, such as Big Dog Ranch Rescue where they can schedule an appointment to read in a stress-free, non-judgmental environment.

It’s more than just scheduling an appointment online, the application allows kids to track their progress, earn recognition and win great prizes and rewards as well.

Moving From My House To a City Of Kindness WPB

The Let’s Get Booking project originated when my mom read about kids reading to dogs at home and how it made the kid feel better, reading to their own dog. So we started doing that. Charlie would hang out on my bed each night and I would read to him.

It really did make me feel much better about my reading practice because Charlie couldn’t correct me and judge my reading skills.

When my parents tried to help me by correcting my mistakes, I told them it made me feel worse and complained to them about it. They said they were just trying to help. I know they were, but it made me very upset.

We reached out to Big Dog Ranch to bring the same experience I share with Charlie to other kids throughout WPB, particularly the kids that don’t have a dog (yet)!

Reading To Dogs In Shelters When You Don’t Have One At Home

Animal shelters are a great place for kids to go to practice their reading to dogs. The shelters typically have a variety of breeds for kids to choose from. It’s a great way for kids to bond with the dogs.

Shelters can use the reading program to draw attention from residents throughout their community and increase the opportunity for pet adoptions.

Reading To Dog Programs

We’re in the process of signing up animal shelters throughout the country to add them to our application’s search engine.

Kids will soon be able to register and search for animal shelters in their community where they can make an appointment online to start reading to dogs. Every time they do so, the application will keep track of their visit and they’ll be eligible to earn great rewards and prizes.
